Reconstructive Surgery Insurance Coverage Needed for Survivors of Domestic Violence!

February 11, 2022

Survivors of domestic abuse and intimate partner violence often have lingering physical injuries in addition to emotional trauma.

Too often, insurance companies deny requests to cover reconstructive treatments that they deem cosmetic. However, these surgeries and procedures can significantly impact survivors’ ability to overcome their emotional and traumatic experiences with violence.

ISMS-backed House Bill 4337 would amend the Illinois Insurance Code to provide coverage for aesthetic services and restorative care provided for the treatment of physical injuries to victims of domestic violence when medically necessary as determined by a physician, and would also apply to those covered by Medicaid.

ISMS urges lawmakers to take action on this important legislation! The bill has been assigned to the House Insurance Committee.

This legislation is the result of a resolution submitted by ISMS members who saw the need for this expanded insurance coverage.

ISMS President Regan Thomas, MD, was interviewed recently about this legislation.
