Medically Necessary Anesthesia Services Legislation Signed!

Governor Pritzker recently signed House Bill 1141 into law, which will require group or individual policies of accident and health insurance or managed care plans to provide coverage for medically necessary anesthesia services, regardless of the duration, for any procedure covered by the policy.

An initiative of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists, which ISMS supported, the new law will also prohibit insurers from denying payment or full reimbursement for anesthesia services solely because the duration of care exceeded a preset time limit.

The legislation took effect Aug. 1, 2025, and applies to private state regulated commercial plans.
