Remember – Medicare Will Reimburse You for Discussing Advance Care Planning with Patients!

As a direct result of ISMS advocacy, Medicare reimburses physicians for time spent counseling patients on advance care planning decisions.
Physicians must be afforded adequate time to conduct these very sensitive and delicate conversations with their patients to ensure that end-of-life care provided is consistent with the patient’s goals and values. And these valuable services physicians provide should be reimbursed!
ISMS is immensely proud of our role in helping to initiate this historic payer policy shift. Our effort began in 2013 and, finally, Medicare announced that physicians would be reimbursed for conversations about advance care starting Jan. 1, 2016.
Under the rule, doctors are reimbursed:

- $86 in office settings and $80 in hospitals (CPT code 99497) for the first 30 minutes of advance care planning.
- Up to $75 for 30 additional minutes of consultation (CPT code 99498).
