Patients Must Be Notified When Mammogram Indicates Dense Breast Tissue

November 8, 2024

Illinois law requires providers of mammography services to notify individuals by means of a mammography summary report if the imaging indicates the individual has dense breast tissue. The law requires notification only and does not require any other obligations for providers of mammography services, a result of ISMS advocacy.

To learn more, access ISMS’ newly updated Issue Brief, Dense Breast Notification: Responsibilities for Physicians in Illinois. The resource covers what defines dense breasts, the link between dense breasts and cancer, patient notification and education, primary care or referring physician responsibility and insurance coverage.
