Illinois General Assembly Passes Prior Authorization Reform

May 28, 2021

Yesterday the Prior Authorization Reform Act (House Bill 711) passed the Illinois Senate unanimously! Previously, this legislation also passed unanimously in the Illinois House.

This ISMS initiative would not have been possible without the hard work of our members and the Your Care Can’t Wait coalition members who joined with us. We also thank Illinois lawmakers for supporting the Prior Authorization Reform Act, which is designed to address significant delays for patient care.

In 2019, ISMS surveyed more than 1,000 Illinois physicians and almost every physician surveyed – 95% – believes that the current process of prior authorization has a negative impact on patients.

Illinois lawmakers have 30 days to send the bill to Governor Pritzker’s desk. ISMS will keep you informed on any developments.

If you have questions, please contact ISMS Senior Vice President of Legislative Affairs Erin O'Brien by email.
