Governor Signs Prior Authorization Reform Act

August 20, 2021

Major ISMS legislative victory for physicians and patients

Starting Jan. 1, 2022, many of the bureaucratic hassles of the prior authorization process should be significantly reduced when the Prior Authorization Reform Act goes into effect in Illinois.

The Governor signed the legislation into law (Public Act 102-409) yesterday afternoon. The new law, which is designed to significantly reduce delays for patient care and applies to state-regulated insurance plans, had unanimous bipartisan support in the Illinois General Assembly during the spring legislative session.

For more information about how this new law will improve transparency, speed and fairness in the prior authorization process, please read the detailed, multi-part series featured in the July issues of Physician Advocate.
