Are You a DEA-Registered Physician? Be Sure to Complete the 8-Hour Training Requirement

April 12, 2024

ISMS offers the courses you need – at no cost to members!

Per federal law, all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered healthcare professionals must take 8 hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders prior to renewing their registration.

The training is intended to ensure that prescribers are treating opioid addictions appropriately beyond Schedule II narcotics and that they receive additional education about overall substance use disorders (SUD), including alcohol.

This one-time requirement must be completed by your next scheduled renewal date so that you can maintain a federal DEA registration.

ISMS offers several courses that count for 1 hour each that may also be applied to the 8-hour training requirement. Read the DEA’s Q&A to learn more.
