Illinois Pilot Program Approved for 5-Year Extension! Good News for Medicaid Patients
July 26, 2024
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved Illinois’ request for a five-year extension of the “Illinois Behavioral Health Transformation” (Section 1115(a) demonstration) and approved the new name of “Illinois Healthcare Transformation.
Section 1115 of the Social Security Act gives the Secretary of Health and Human Services authority to approve experimental, pilot or “demonstration” projects that are likely to assist in promoting the objectives of the Medicaid program.
The approval of Illinois Healthcare Transformation’s extension means that these services for Medicaid patients will continue:
- Substance use disorder (SUD) treatment for individuals residing in an Institution for Mental Diseases (IMD)
- SUD case management
- Supported employment services
- Health-related social needs (HRSN) services
- Violence prevention and intervention services
- Non-medical transportation
Within this demonstration is a new initiative to offer pre-release services for eligible incarcerated individuals.
The extension is effective through June 30, 2029, upon which date, unless extended or otherwise amended, all authorities granted to operate this demonstration will expire.
