Understanding Telemedicine Reimbursement During COVID-19

September 4, 2020

As the COVID-19 public health emergency began escalating, health professionals and hospitals quickly expanded their use of telemedicine to continue treating patients while containing the spread of the virus.

Through Executive Orders (EOs), Governor Pritzker has modified reimbursement rules for telehealth services rendered during the pandemic. The initial EO was issued on March 19 and has been extended to date. Similar rules were enacted at the federal level for Medicare beneficiaries. A grey area exists for some commercial insurance companies; some employer-provided plans are regulated under federal ERISA rules and are not bound by the order.

To help our members better understand how these billing changes impact them, ISMS offers Telemedicine Tips for COVID-19. This resource covers general guidance for healthcare professionals and important changes related to telehealth.
