Remdesivir Becomes First FDA-Approved Treatment for COVID-19

October 30, 2020

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that remdesivir would be the first approved treatment for COVID-19.

The FDA approved the antiviral drug Veklury (remdesivir) with these parameters:

  • The drug is for adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older.

  • The patient must weigh at least 88 pounds.

  • Remdesivir is to be used for treatment only if the patient is already requiring hospitalization.

This approval follows the earlier emergency use authorization of remdesivir to treat certain populations requiring hospitalization for COVID-19.
