Street Drugs Laced with Fentanyl Can Now Be Detected with a Simple Test
December 3, 2021
Illicitly manufactured fentanyl continues to be the culprit for the dramatic spike in drug overdose deaths.
An evidence-based way to help reduce drug overdoses is the fentanyl test strip (FTS). The tests can detect the presence of fentanyl in pills, powder or injectables. Many users do not know what is in the drug they are taking or whether it contains fentanyl.
But will those using drugs test first?
In a 2018 study of drug users given the strips, a positive test for fentanyl was significantly associated with a change in behavior to reduce the risk of overdose.
