UPDATE: ICD-10-CM implementation date delayed until October 2015.

CMS Conducting Final Acknowledgement Testing

To help you prepare for the transition to ICD-10, CMS offers providers acknowledgement testing with your Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) and the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) MAC Common Electronic Data Interchange (CEDI) contractor. The final acknowledgement testing period is scheduled for June 1-5, 2015.

International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) Testing with Providers through the Common Edits and Enhancements Module (CEM) and Common Electronic Data Interchange (CEDI)

Physicians and their staff are quickly preparing for the upcoming change from the ICD-9-CM to the ICD-10-CM diagnosis code data set. Effective Oct. 1, 2015, all HIPAA-covered entities that send and receive electronic commerce involving protected health and patient financial information must utilize the new data set to describe patient diagnoses and conditions. The Illinois State Medical Society has prepared two Issue Briefs to assist you with adopting, implementing and eventually using the new diagnosis code data set and we encourage you to attend upcoming and On Demand educational programs on this topic.

May 12 Notice: Applications for ICD-10  "end-to-end testing" are being accepted through May 22. Testing will occur July 20 through 24, 2015.  Interested physicians or practice management professionals should click here for more information or here to view the application form.

ISMS Resources

The ICD-10-CM data set is housed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and overseen by a consortium of fellow stakeholders including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association. A wealth of information regarding the adoption and implementation of ICD-10-CM may be found on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website.

The World Health Organization developed its free online tutorial to assist clinicians and billers with learning the basics of the new diagnosis code data set. While the tutorial has not been modified for the U.S. Health System, it explores the generalities of ICD-10.
