Clarity Needed for APNs, PAs Roles with Controlled Substances
Posted on: 4/25/2014

In a letter to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), ISMS formally comments on proposed amendments to the Illinois Controlled Substances Act rules.

The communiqué requests IDFPR clarify that advanced practice nurses and physician assistants may select, order and administer controlled substances in a hospital; hospital affiliate; or ambulatory surgical treatment center instead  of having the authority to prescribe in those institutions.

The letter also addressed proposed amendments allowing IDFPR to conduct inspections without a subpoena, notice or reasonable requirement.

ISMS will continue to monitor these amendments to the Act.
