Enrollment Period for ACA Insurance Ends on Monday; Medicaid Enrollment Continues Forward
Posted on: 3/28/2014

Just a few days remain for the uninsured to enroll in the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace, as required by the Affordable Care Act, or face tax penalties. The open enrollment period closes after March 31  and doesn't start again until Nov. 15, 2014, for coverage in 2015.

The Obama administration recently announced that it will be flexible as to the March 31 deadline; those who have begun the enrollment process via the federal insurance marketplace by March 31 but who do not finish by that date will now have until about mid-April to ask for an extension.

Beyond March 31 and through the rest of the year, the law does allow for special 2014 enrollments following certain life events that involve a change in family status (e.g., marriage, divorce or birth of a child) or loss of other health coverage.

Illinois residents who qualify for Medicaid may apply for insurance now and beyond March 31, 2014, without penalty; "navigators" will continue to be available to provide assistance.
