Avoid Payment Adjustments in 2015; Hardship Exceptions are Available
Posted on: 3/21/2014

Here's the latest notice for physicians from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services concerning deadlines to demonstrate meaningful use and apply for a hardship exception.

Meet October 1 deadline to avoid payment adjustment

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009mandates that payment adjustments will be applied to Medicare eligible professionals who are not meaningful users of EHRs under the EHR Incentive Program. Here's what you need to know now:

  • If you successfully demonstrated meaningful use in 2013, you will not be subject to payment adjustments in 2015.
  • Those who will demonstrate meaningful use in 2014 must do so for a 90-day reporting period before Oct. 1, 2014.
  • Physicians who are only eligible to participate in the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program are not subject to these payment adjustments.

Apply for a hardship exception by July 1

You may qualify to be exempt from a payment adjustment if you can prove that demonstrating meaningful use would result in a significant hardship. To be considered, complete this Hardship Exception application by July 1, 2014.
