A Message to Congress: Keep Up the Heat on SGR Repeal Legislation
Posted on: 2/14/2014

Under the AMA's lead, ISMS joined 111 other state and national medical societies to applaud the introduction of H.R. 4015/ S. 2000, the SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act of 2014 and urge Congress to quickly pass the measure.

This is the much anticipated legislation that would stop the "patch madness" and repeal and replace Medicare's sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula once and for all.

Some of the main provisions of the bill include the immediate repeal of the SGR; positive annual payment updates of 0.5 percent for five years; and a standard of care provision (advocated by ISMS) to ensure that quality measures in Medicare, Medicaid and the ACA do not create a "Pandora's box" for medical liability lawsuits.

However, one very big issue remains outstanding: how to pay for it.

Last week the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, and the U.S. Senate Finance Committee negotiated this bipartisan, bicameral bill.

Now Congress must keep this momentum going!

Call to Action: Contact your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators Durbin and Kirk; urge them to pass SGR repeal legislation NOW.
