If Changing Your Medicare Participation, Declare Status by December 31
Posted on: 10/25/2013

Toward the end of each year, physicians have an opportunity to determine if they want to change their Medicare participation status for the following year. If you are planning make a change, you may do so between November 15 and December 31.
Here are the details:

  • Physicians who are currently participating in Medicare and choose to continue for 2014 do not have to do anything. Likewise, physicians who are currently non-participating should do nothing if they decide to continue as non-participating.
  • Physicians who want to become PAR (to begin participating in Medicare and accept assignment on all claims) for 2014 must complete the Medicare Participating Physician or Supplier Agreement by Dec. 31, 2013.
  • If you now wish to become Non-PAR (may accept Medicare assignment on a case-by-case basis) in 2014, you must write to each Medicare contractor to which you submit claims, advising that you are terminating the participation agreement for 2014. This written notice must be postmarked prior to Jan. 1, 2014.
