Rejected Medicare Claims or No Payment? Here's What Happened
Posted on: 9/27/2013

National Government Services (NGS) had detected a National Provider Identifier (NPI) error in the Sept. 13, 2013, and Sept. 20, 2013, payment batch files. As a result, Medicare claim payments for Part B for those two batches were delayed, affecting 150 Illinois physicians. (Minnesota and Wisconsin also experienced delayed payments.)

The NPI issue is now resolved; however, NGS is continuing to inspect payment batch files to ensure accuracy going forward.

Claims affected by the NPI error were rejected prior to reaching the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) gateway, causing physicians to receive EDI transmission reports indicating that their claims were not accepted for processing. These affected claims need to be resubmitted for processing. Physicians can expect payment within the usual timeframe of 14 days.
