Health Insurance Marketplace
Posted on: 9/27/2013

The six-month open enrollment period for Illinois' health insurance marketplace begins Tuesday, October 1, and your patients may present questions about the new health insurance framework.

One important piece of information they will need to find is whether theirpreferred physicians and hospitals are in-network or out-of-network - detailsthat may not be available on the exchanges and may have to be determinedby accessing the chosen plan's website.

But in the meantime, if asked, you can start sharing these key access points for buying health insurance, including a link that offers general
information:

  1. Shop online at http://www.healthcare.gov (English and Spanish are available). This site also offers general information.
  2. Call 800-318-2596 (translations are available in 150 languages). Hearing impaired patients using TTY/TDD technology should call
    855-889-4325.
  3. Get "in-person" counseling; contact the resource in your area. ("Navigators" and "application counselors" help patients obtain coverage.)

Open enrollment will run from Oct. 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014, and the new health care coverage is expected to take effect on Jan. 1, 2014
