Your Patients WILL Have Questions about IL Marketplaces
Posted on: 9/20/2013
Here are Some Answers ...

The enrollment period for Illinois' insurance exchange (or as it is now called, marketplace") opens in 10 days and patients may expect their physicians to be a resource for the new health insurance framework.

Below are "broad brush strokes" that you can touch on for patients, including a public website for patient reference:

Open enrollment runs from Oct. 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014. The health care coverage is expected to take effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

There are several access points for the marketplaces:

    1. Online at www.healthcare.gov (English and Spanish is available).
    2. Via an 800 number, with translations available in 150 languages. (The number to call is 800-318-2596; hearing impaired patients using TTY/TDD technology should call 855-889-4325.)
    3. In person counseling; contact the resource in your area. ("Navigators" and "application counselors" help patients obtain coverage.)

At press time, there is still no purchase price or plan information available, but these details are expected on October 1.

This website for patients to sign up online also contains other general information: www.healthcare.gov.
