Two Deaths Reported in Illinois from West Nile Virus

The first human death in Illinois for 2013 as a result of the West Nile virus was discovered in Logan County, followed a few days later by a second death in Cook County. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging Illinois residents to be vigilant in protecting themselves against this virus.

Remind patients that they still need to protect themselves against mosquito bites and possible West Nile virus infection until the first hard freeze

At press time, 10 human cases have been reported so far this year. West Nile virus positive birds, mosquitoes and/or human cases have been reported in 59 counties.
