  • Round 3: FDA Advisory Panel to Review Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 Vaccine Friday

A third COVID-19 vaccine is likely to gain emergency use approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) very soon.

Clinical trials have indicated that a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine had an efficacy rate of up to 72%. Today the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, made up of nongovernmental scientists and public health experts from across the United States, will review and vote on whether to recommend Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine to the FDA for emergency use. FDA staff endorsed emergency approval of the vaccine on Wednesday.

In late 2020, this same advisory panel recommended that the FDA approve the Pfizer-BioNTech and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use, which the FDA approved one day later in both cases.

Stay tuned for the panel’s vote, coming today.

  • Are Your Patients with COVID-19 Eligible for Monoclonal Antibody Treatment?

Patients who test positive for COVID-19 may qualify to receive monoclonal antibody treatment (casirivimab and imdevimab).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for these medications last November for mild or moderate cases of COVID-19 in adults and children who are at high risk with at least one health condition

In a clinical trial of patients with COVID-19, monoclonal antibody treatment reduced hospitalization or emergency room visits in high risk patients. The safety and effectiveness of this treatment for COVID-19 continues to be evaluated.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers a resource to help patients find locations for monoclonal antibody treatment: Therapeutics Distribution Locations.
