  • After Passage in the House, All Eyes on Senate for Prior Authorization Reform

    prior auth

Last week, the Prior Authorization Reform Act (House Bill 711) unanimously passed out of the Illinois House of Representatives by a vote of 117-0

This House legislation is now in the Illinois Senate and is currently assigned to the Senate Insurance Committee.

Please contact your state Senator today and urge support of House Bill 711, the Prior Authorization Reform Act!

This legislation is designed to address significant delays for patient care caused by prior authorization and would:

    • Establish important maximum timelines for urgent and non-urgent prior authorization requests. Currently, there are no standard timelines, forcing patients to wait an excessive amount of time, often weeks, before care can be initiated.

    • Ensure that prior authorization requirements are based on medical evidence and that decisions are administered by qualified professionals.

  • Medicare Increases Reimbursement Rate for Administering the COVID-19 Vaccine
    covid vaccine

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has increased the Medicare payment rate for administering the COVID-19 vaccine as part of an effort to expand vaccination.

Effective on or after March 15, 2021:

    • For the administration of single-dose vaccines, the national average payment rate for physicians will increase from approximately $28 to $40.

    • For the administration of vaccines requiring two doses, the national average payment rate for physicians will increase from approximately $45 to $80

The exact payment rate for administration of each dose of a COVID-19 vaccine will depend on the type of entity (physician, hospital, pharmacy or other immunizer) providing the service. In addition, the payment rate will be geographically adjusted based on where the service is delivered.
