Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) gave approval for Illinois to move forward with expanding Medicaid coverage for new moms. The federal government approved an ISMS-supported request to provide healthcare coverage for Medicaid mothers for one full year after delivery.

Illinois is the first state in the nation to provide the coverage extension, which was included in the federal government’s latest COVID-19 relief bill.

HHS made the announcement at the start of Black Maternal Health Week.

A 2018 report by the Illinois Department of Public Health (covering 2008 to 2016) revealed that non-Hispanic Black women are six times as likely to die of a pregnancy-related condition as non-Hispanic white women.
