  • The Value of Telemedicine Emerges as a “Silver Lining” Amidst the COVID-19 Crisis

    Telehealth Survey

The COVID-19 pandemic unleashed a wave of emergency actions to break down barriers to telemedicine use, which in turn resulted in its widespread adoption. ISMS surveyed members for feedback on how the telemedicine surge has impacted medical practices and patient access to care. This survey has provided us with valuable data as we advocate in Springfield for permanent payment parity for healthcare provided via telemedicine.

Here are a few highlights of the key findings:

    • 76% indicated that prior to the pandemic they had not offered any telemedicine services before the pandemic, but are now doing so.

    • 50% indicated that telemedicine proved particularly beneficial for their patients in underserved areas.

    • 73% found telemedicine especially helpful for chronic care management.

    • 65% found telemedicine very helpful for handling urgent care issues.

  • Telemedicine: A Versatile Tool for Increasing Access to Care During COVID-19 and Beyond

    ISMS democracy

Early in the coronavirus crisis, ISMS worked with the Pritzker Administration in taking decisive steps to fight the pandemic. The governor ultimately issued executive orders to increase the volunteer medical workforce and provide temporary liability protection for healthcare delivery. There was also a recognized need for a different type of healthcare, one that allowed patients to receive healthcare in the safety of their own home. One solution to this dilemma was, of course, telemedicine.

  • Patients with Vitamin D Deficiency Are Twice as Likely to Test Positive for COVID-19

    vitamin d

As health experts continue to learn about COVID-19 infections and who may be at higher risk, a recent study focused on vitamin D levels.

The Sept. 3 JAMA study found that patients with vitamin D deficiency were 1.77 times more likely to test positive for the virus than patients with sufficient vitamin D.

Vitamin D is important for the immune system and long before the pandemic, supplements for this vitamin had been known to help lower the risk of viral respiratory tract infections.

A whopping one-half of the U.S. population is vitamin D deficient, with higher rates among Black and Hispanic populations, as well as individuals who live in areas where it is difficult to obtain the needed amount of sun exposure.
