Get Ready! New Medicare Cards Arriving Soon to Illinois Beneficiaries; MBI Look-Up Tool Now Available
Posted on: 6/19/2018

Postal carriers will soon be delivering new Medicare ID cards to beneficiaries in the Prairie State.

The expected 60 million new Medicare cards in the United States are being mailed in phases by geographic location. Illinois' mailing is set for after June 2018.

A Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the Social Security number on the new cards to help curb identity theft.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will accept both old and new cards for Medicare transactions during a transition period from April 1, 2018, to Dec. 31, 2019. Starting January 2020, CMS will only accept cards with the MBI.
