ISMS Joins National Effort to Support Physician-Led Health Delivery
Posted on: 11/21/2017

An ISMS co-sponsored resolution relating to Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) was adopted with overwhelming support by the American Medical Association last week.

The resolution, initiated by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, seeks to establish medicine’s position on national efforts for an APRN Multistate Compact. The proposed Compact is an effort to streamline multistate licensure, but under current form could supersede individual state collaboration and scope of practice requirements.

An APRN with a multistate license could conceivably practice without supervision, collaboration, or oversight in any APRN Compact state. The Compact has been authorized in three states and becomes operational when 10 states have joined.

The AMA House of Delegates action codifies organized medicine’s support for state oversight for health professional licensure and initiates a plan for AMA to develop consensus-principles related to the APRN Compact.
