Recruit Your Patients in Fight Against Prescription Drug Abuse

About one-third of all medicines go unused each year in the United States – and, unfortunately, some of these medications are diverted into the hands of someone who will abuse or misuse the pills.

To encourage the general public to address their supply of unused or expired prescription medications, law enforcement and other government agencies often host "take-back" events in which these drugs can be brought to a legal collection site.

The next National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day takes place on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(Check back here after April 1 to locate collection sites near you.)

  • To help promote this event, ISMS and ISMIE Mutual offer a downloadable patient education poster and this infographic to hang in your office, post on your web site or share on social media.

  • You can also download wallet/purse-sized cards to distribute to your patients, which summarize the general steps for safe disposal of medication.

  • To learn more about physician and patient roles in disposing of unused medications, including sample medications, access ISMS'  Issue Brief.
