Medicaid Managed Care: ISMS Hears You Loud and Clear; Survey Still Open Until Aug. 31
Posted on: 8/18/2016

Thank you to the hundreds of physicians and practice management professionals who participated in the ISMS Medicaid managed care survey!

We will offer a complete analysis of survey results in September. Here’s a quick preview of the early responses:

  • A significant number of practices are impacted by the Medicaid managed care transition
    • Eighty-five percent of respondents participate in traditional Medicaid.
    • Eighty percent participate in a Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO).
    • Most respondents (59 percent) participate in more than one MCO.

  • Physicians have concerns with the Medicaid MCO credentialing process
    • Almost half of responding practices experienced a significant delay in credentialing with a new MCO.
    • Only 11 percent of respondents experienced an average credentialing process of less than 60 days.

  • MCO patients aren’t familiar with how the program works
    • Two-thirds of respondents indicate that most patients don’t know which MCO they have been assigned to by Medicaid.
    • Most respondents (60 percent) indicate their patients generally don’t know which primary care physician they’ve been assigned to by Medicaid.

The information gathered in this survey will inform and amplify ISMS advocacy during the Medicaid managed care transition. Aggregate date will be shared with the Department of Health and Family Services and the MCOs to improve patient access and reduce physician burden.

The survey end date has been extended through August 31. Only active practice members were contacted to participate. If you don’t recall receiving the survey notice and would like to participate, there is still time. Email us to request a survey link.

ISMS extends our gratitude to the Illinois Psychiatric Society and Illinois Academy of Family Physicians for their help promoting this survey.
