Learn What Physicians Had to Say about Potential Merger of Aetna, Humana
Posted on: 4/27/2016

ISMS initiated a survey to get your opinion about the possible merger of Aetna and Humana, and how it might affect your medical practice and patients.

Here are the key points of the physician responses:

  • 74 percent opposed the possible merger because of the adverse impact it could have on competition, patient choice and physicians' ability to negotiate fair reimbursement.
  • 82 percent indicated that less competition and narrower networks in the commercial insurance markets would be "very likely" or "somewhat likely" to reduce patient access to care.
  • 89 percent indicated that it was "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that reimbursement rates for physicians would decrease, resulting in a reduction in the quality and quantity of services that physicians offer patients.

ISMS thanks the physicians and practice management professionals who participated in the survey. Aggregate survey data will be used to highlight how the merger will impact patient access to care in Illinois.
