  • A Physician's Success Story: Engaging Patients in Advance Care Planning

A new ISMS resource highlights your colleagues’ successes and challenges in navigating key issues in the practice of medicine – from a practical standpoint.

Our latest case study features ISMS member Julie D. Goldstein, MD, a palliative care physician and advance care planning (ACP) educator. Now that Medicare is reimbursing physicians for advance care planning services – a direct result of ISMS advocacy – it is important for doctors to understand their role in helping patients express and document their wishes for future health care.

If you've successfully met a practice challenge, or want to suggest a topic in which you could use some help, drop us a note.

Advance care planning awareness in the United States

With National Health Care Decision Day on April 16, this month can serve as a prompt for physicians across the country to encourage patients to make their health care wishes known through an advance directive.

Here in Illinois, you can start the conversation with ISMS' A Personal Decision brochure, which includes practical information and forms for designating health care powers of attorney, do-not-resuscitate decisions and more.

Member physicians may obtain up to 300 FREE print copies per year for distribution to patients. Call 800-782-4767 or send an email to order print copies.
