  • The VA Wants to Abandon Physician-Led Anesthesia Care, Replace with Solo Nursing Care

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) is advancing a dangerous addition to its policy document that would mandate "independent" practice for all Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). The move essentially supplants the proven model of a physician-led team for administering anesthesia to patients who are veterans, and replaces it with solo nursing care.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists (ISA) strongly oppose this change and believe this new addition to the Veterans Health Administration Nursing Handbook should be struck. Dismantling physician-led anesthesia care teams directly compromises patient safety for our nation's veterans.
