Medicare "Dings" Begin in 2015 for Non-Compliance with Meaningful Use

Did you receive a notice in the mail regarding a cut to your Medicare reimbursements for 2015? If you did, you are not alone. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is informing about a quarter of a million physiciansvia snail mail that they will feel a financial pinch this year, affecting more than 50 percent of physicians who treat Medicare patients.

    Why?

Those receiving a letter did not demonstrate meaningful use with an electronic health record system and, therefore, will have their Medicare reimbursements cut by 1 percent. On top of that, some physicians did not prescribe medications electronically and will be dinged an additional 1 percent.

The cuts will hit every Medicare bill in 2015, even if the physician has since complied, because the penalties stem from non-compliance with the meaningful use rule.

    avoidAvoid Claim Denials:
Specific CPT Codes Required for Care Provided in Private Residence

National Government Services (NGS), the Medicare contractor covering Illinois, reports an increase in incorrect CPT codes used for billing outpatient evaluation and management services performed in a private residence.

To bill services for a home visit, use these home setting CPT codes:

    99341-99345 (new patient)

    99347-99350 (established patient)

Starting February 25, NGS will deny claims if the place of service on the claim is not compatible with the service billed. In other words, avoid using "outpatient" or "office" codes for home visits.
