  • Gov. Signs Legislation for Patient-Friendly Power of Attorney Form

Victory is here! This week Governor Quinn signed ISMS-initiated legislation (S.B. 3228) that simplifies the power of attorney for health care form. pen 2

For several years, ISMS heard from patients and health care professionals that the form is confusing and uses too much technical language. So we developed a more patient-friendly power of attorney form that the citizens of Illinois would be able to understand on their own, without needing a professional to explain it to them. The language in the form is now at the 10th grade level, and the notice cover page is now at the 8th grade level.

Earlier this month, ISMS sent a letter to the governor urging him to sign S.B. 3228 into law, which amends the Illinois Power of Attorney Act.

ISMS continues to lead the charge in educating the public and health care professionals about advance directives and health care planning, as it has for many decades.
