  • November 4 General Election: Find Out What Judicial Candidates, Current Judges Stand For!

It's still summertime, but activities for the fall election are ramping up quickly.

Each year the Illinois Civil Justice League (ICJL) surveys judicial candidates seeking election and sitting judges seeking retention to glean their views and positions prior to the November 4 General Election. Surveys went out to 69 judicial candidates and 158 sitting judges.

A Supreme Court election is also on the ballot: Justice Lloyd Karmeier (Republican) seeks retention in the Fifth Judicial District, which includes 37 counties in Southern Illinois.

ICJL will post candidate responses at www.IllinoisJudges.net. Check back often as the site will be updated as the surveys are returned.

In September, ICJL will announce its evaluations and possible endorsements.

    Election refresher

Judges seeking retention must receive "yes" votes from 60 percent of voters; judicial candidates in contested races need to win against their opponents.

Terms for Supreme and appellate court justices are 10 years each; circuit court terms are six years each.

ISMS and ISMIE Mutual are founding members of the ICJL,a coalition of Illinois citizens, small and large businesses, associations, professional societies, not-for-profit organizations and local governments that have joined together to work for fairness in the Illinois civil justice system.
