  • Make Medical Cannabis Certification Reportable

ISMS has formally commented on the proposed medical cannabis rules. In letters to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and the Illinois Department of Public Health, we recommend that certification of a qualified patient for use of medical cannabis be reported to the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program. This program currently allows physicians and other health care professionals to review which patients have already been prescribed Schedule II, III, IV and V controlled substances.

By adding this requirement, health care professionals will be better able to identify which patients are currently using medical cannabis or other controlled substances.

  • Understand the Authority and Limits of PAs, APNs to Diagnose, Prescribe

Due to complex rules within Illinois law regarding relationships among health care team members, collaboration and supervision issues may at times be challenging.

That's why ISMS developed medical legal guides to help physicians better understand the current regulatory requirements pertaining to the authority of physician assistants and advanced practice nurses to diagnose and prescribe in the hospital and private practice settings.

These publications are for educational purposes and are not intended as nor should be considered legal advice.
