  • Dry Needling No Longer within Scope of Practice for PTs

    In a rare move, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) reversed its informal opinion last week. The department determined that intramuscular manual therapy or "dry needling" is not within the scope of practice for physical therapists.

    ISMS, along with several other medical societies, supported this effort to reverse the ruling. Upon careful review of the acupuncture and physical therapy acts as currently written, IDFPR agreed with the concerns of our coalition: Dry needling performed by physical therapists does not provide safe and effective treatment of Illinois patients.
