  • ISMS Education Center: Protect Your Medical Office’s Privacy and Security
    locked computer

The security of patients’ medical information is no doubt one of your top priorities in your office.

As paper records give way to electronic databases, ensuring security and privacy for your office has become more complicated than simply locking the file cabinet. Practices must also abide by federal laws that direct how health records are to be protected.

Do you currently have privacy and security policies and procedures in place that align with HIPAA’s requirements?

ISMS offers an on-demand course, Protecting Your Practice's Privacy & Security, covering how to identify security risks associated with medical records and other common electronic devices, such as smartphones, iPads or tablets.

The course is FREE to ISMS members and their staff. (CME available.)

  • New Medicare Card Update: The Use of the MBI Is Soaring!
    ID rocket

Is your medical office using the new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) for Medicare transactions?

As you know by now, the MBI is replacing the Social Security number on Medicare cards to help curb identity theft.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), current stats show that health professionals are submitting 75% of their fee-for-service claims with the new MBI!

CMS will accept both old and new cards for Medicare transactions during a transition period from April 1, 2018, to Dec. 31, 2019.

But starting January 2020, CMS will only accept cards with the MBI.

For more information, check out CMS’ article, New Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI); Get It, Use It.

  • Here’s Help for ANY Patient Who Has Difficulty Affording Insulin Medication

More than 30 million Americans have diabetes– 10 percent of the total population of the United States!

From 2002 to 2013, prices for insulin have tripled, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Today, insulin can cost as much as $500 for a box of five pens.

This whopping increase in insulin costs has hit patients’ pocketbooks pretty hard – to the point that some are rationing their insulin. This is a dangerous practice that can result in life-threatening complications including blindness, loss of limbs, kidney failure and even death.

That’s why the ADA assembled resources to help anyone who is struggling to pay for their insulin medication; three insulin manufacturers offer hotlines for patients who need immediate assistance and long-term solutions.

To help spread the word, download ISMS’ patient educational flyer promoting the ADA's resources.

Hand the flyer out to patients, post on your practice website, share via social media, or hang in your exam rooms.
