Legislative advocacy consistently ranks highest on the list of reasons physicians choose to join ISMS and to retain their membership. It’s not a secret that ISMS is the single voice representing all Illinois doctors, regardless of specialty, geography or practice location. From defending the state’s Medical Practice Act to rebuffing scope of practice incursions, our 2013 legislative achievements illustrate the importance of ISMS intervention in Springfield and the tangible advocacy benefits you receive through your membership.

Although advocacy is our strength, ISMS also offers a multitude of valuable benefits to support you throughout your medical life. Here are a just a few.

Students – The Medical Student Section carries a strong voice and is an access point to organized medicine for many future leaders. Recently, our MSS joined with the Residents and Fellows Section in hosting a half-day program for medical students to help them prepare for residency interviews. More than 50 medical students were coached on interview skills and heard helpful advice from program directors and current residents on negotiating the interview process.

Residents – For most residents, there’s little time for anything other than learning their craft. The ISMS Resident and Fellows Section provides support and tools during an intense period of training. The ISMS RFS assists with sensitive issues such as residency burnout and weighing the benefits of employment or independent practice after training.

Academic Physicians – Since its inception our Residency Program Directors meeting has grown each year.  Our speakers are leaders in the medical education field and the topics are timely and relevant. This year, our program digs deep on how social media affects training programs, the Next Accreditation System for residency programs, and dealing with problem residents. Registration is now open for this popular program being held on December 7. And of course ISMS members attend at a steep discount!

Doctors in Practice – Our products and services for active practice members represent the largest share of our offerings. It’s tough to narrow down which of our resources to mention here, so I’ll go with one of our most popular: the ISMS Medical Legal Library. This web resource is a wonderful repository of information on practice and employment issues. Coming soon are medical legal guidelines on two new laws that garnered a lot of headlines this year: medical marijuana and conceal carry. If you’ve never accessed the Library, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Doctors in Retirement – Even in retirement many of our members remain active in clinical practice or give back through medical volunteerism. The licensure renewal year is coming in 2014, and the mandatory 150 hours of continuing medical education applies to retirees wishing to maintain their medical license. Free or low cost educational offerings for members have expanded greatly with the launch of the ISMS Education Center, where seminar listings, webinars and on-demand coursework are easily accessible and offer CME credits. Learn at your leisure while earning the necessary hours for licensure.

Looking forward to 2014

Next year, expect ISMS to offer many new activities and member-exclusive resources. In the coming weeks, watch for our announcement of the 2014 menu of education programs we’ll offer. Expect more practical information on practice management and hot topics like the Affordable Care Act. Of course, we’ll be ready to represent your interests when members of the Illinois General Assembly convene in January for the 2014 session. Be sure to renew your membership to experience all that ISMS offers.
