Coming Soon ... Transition to National Government Services
Posted on: 6/1/2013

As you know by now, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has awarded the contract for administering the Medicare Part A and Part B programs to a new vendor.

National Government Services (NGS) will be taking over for the geographic location that includes Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, known as Jurisdiction 6 or simply "J6."

This vendor change becomes effective July 1 for implementation in September and replaces services by Illinois' Medicare carrier, WPS.

Here's how the transition will work: NGS will take responsibility for the new workload "one segment at a time" based on geographic location. For the implementation schedule, visit the Jurisdiction 6 Transition website.

Payment policies

CMS has approved 62 Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) that the new Medicare administrator will use. LCDs are basically "payment" policies that govern whether Medicare should cover a particular item or service for the region.
