Chicago Physician Elected President of the Illinois State Medical Society

Oak Brook, IL - William A. McDade, M.D., Ph.D., a board-certified anesthesiologist and researcher in sickle cell disease, was elected President of the Illinois State Medical Society at its recent annual meeting here. Dr. McDade is the Deputy Provost for Research and Minority Issues and an Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago. He has an active clinical practice in obstetrical and general anesthesia.

An ISMS member since 1981, Dr. McDade has served on numerous councils and committees, including the Medical Student Section Governing Council and the Health Care Access Committee. He chaired the Governmental Affairs Council and most recently served as ISMS President-Elect. He is active in many other medical organizations, including the American Medical Association (AMA), the National Medical Association, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He is a former president of the Cook County Physicians Association (1998-2002). Dr. McDade is currently a Director with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and is Chair-Elect for the AMA's Council on Medical Education. He is a published author and cited in numerous medical journals.

Locally, Dr. McDade is a former president of both the Chicago Medical Society (CMS) and the Chicago Society of Anesthesiologists. In 2012 he was named CMS' Physician of the Year.

After receiving his undergraduate degree from DePaul University, Dr. McDade attended graduate school at the University of Chicago, studying biophysics & theoretical biology. He earned his medical degree and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. McDade completed an anesthesiology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard Medical School.

Dr. McDade resides in Chicago with his wife Jennifer, twin girls, and infant son.
