    Subject: Workplace Demeanor

    Whereas, reports of inappropriate behavior and relationships in the workplace, including sexual harassment and bullying, are illustrating the enormity of the problem; and

    Whereas, health and medical workplaces are not immune to the problems of bullying and sexual harassment; therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, the Illinois State Medical Society develop and make widely available guidelines that define bullying, sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior, for health and medical workplace employers and employees; and be it further

    RESOLVED, that the Illinois State Medical Society urge the American Medical Association to undertake a similar project.

    Existing ISMS policy and action related to this issue:

    ISMS: (1) condemns the senseless violence in families; (2) strongly encourages all physicians to be aware of the potential for signs of abuse in all patients; (3) reminds all physicians of their obligation to participate in any reporting requirements for such abuse; and (4) urges physicians to become active in local programs designed to address the issues of domestic violence.     ISMS continues to take an active interest in the apprehension and prosecution of those persons committing assaults on physicians, including the offering of rewards and other incentives in the solution of such cases. (HOD 1992; Last BOT Review 2011)
