Brush Up on CME Requirements for License Renewal

Illinois’ next medical license renewal deadline is July 31, 2011. Physicians must accumulate 150 hours of documented continuing medical education (CME) credit in order to renew their medical licenses by the July 31 deadline.

CME credits come in two categories:

  • Formal credit (AMA PRA Category 1-type activities) – A minimum of 60 hours is required, although the entire 150 hour requirement may be completed as formal CME. Original certificates of participation must be retained as proof of completion.

  • Informal credit (AMA PRA Category 2-type activities) – A maximum of 90 hours may be acquired. These hours pertain to many self-directed activities such as peer review and journal reading. Physicians should document the type of learning activity, along with the date and time spent on the activity.

Retired physicians must also complete 150 hours of CME credit to retain their medical licenses.

Retain all printed CME certificates and other documented proof of CME completion. AMA PRA certificates are accepted as proof of CME completion and are valid for up to three years. CME activities must have taken place during the current (2008-2011) cycle in order to count toward license renewal.

Contact Audrey Vanagunas, 800-782-4767 ext. 2465, or by e-mail, with license renewal questions.
