For Physicians

Physicians are required to renew their medical licenses with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) by July 31, 2008.

For this licensure cycle, physicians must complete their IDFPR-required online physician profile before they can renew their medical license, and may do so at the physician profile site, www.idfpr.com/update.asp.

Paper renewal

On June 1, 2008, IDFPR began mailing renewal forms only to those physicians who have not yet renewed their medical license and who have completed their online physician profile. Physicians choosing to use the paper submission process need to fill out the form and mail it to IDFPR, along with their check. Controlled substance license(s) renewal is also included in the renewal form.

Online renewal

Physicians who have completed their online physician profile may renew online at www.idfpr.com/dpr/RENEWAL/phys.asp, one of three ways:

  1. Using the personal ID number (PIN) included with IDFPR’s April mailing of “yellow postcards” to all physicians who completed their online profile.

  2. Using the personal ID number (PIN) on the renewal form IDFPR mailed on June 1 to all physicians who completed their online profile.

  3. Using their medical license number and social security number or date of birth.

Note: Physicians who answer “yes” to any “personal history” questions during the online renewal process will need to switch to the paper submission process.

Important – controlled substance license online renewal update

Physicians who self-renew their medical license online must take additional steps to renew their controlled substance licenses:

  1. Log in to IDFPR’s medical license renewal site (same as above).

  2. Click on the “click here to view/print login information for your subordinate licenses” link.

  3. A page will open that shows your controlled substance license number(s) and PIN. Use this new PIN to renew your controlled substance license. Physicians who have received the renewal form mailed June 1 may enter the controlled substance license number and specific
PIN contained on the renewal form.
