State Medical Society Separates from AMA

Oak Brook - After extended, emotional debate, the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) voted today to de-unify from the American Medical Association (AMA). De-unification means that all Illinois physicians are now free to join ISMS and their local county medical society without simultaneously joining the AMA. The change takes effect immediately.

"We heard the voices of our members, that’s what carried the day," said ISMS President, Clair M. Callan, M.D. "They told us in no uncertain terms they want the freedom to choose. Now they have that choice."

De-unification required a two-thirds vote of the House of Delegates in order to change the Society’s bylaws. ISMS and the AMA have maintained a unified membership status since the early 1950s.

"We will continue to work closely with the AMA, and urge doctors to maintain their AMA membership and support. Our national presence depends on our continued commitment," stressed Dr. Callan. "This is a change in process, not a change in relationship."

The Illinois State Medical Society is a professional organization that represents and unifies its physician members as they practice the science and art of medicine. The Society represents the interests of member physicians, advocates for patients and promotes the doctor/patient relationship, the ethical practice of medicine, and the betterment of the public health.
