Brief Biographical Information:

Dr. Backs is a board-certified internist who practices medicine in Springfield, IL. He earned his medical degree and completed his residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. From 1984-1985, he served as chief of medical residents in the SIU Department of Internal Medicine.

Professional Involvement:

As an active member of ISMS since 1984, Dr. Backs served as president from 2005-2006 and chair of the Board from 2010-2012. He is currently a Sangamon County district trustee. His ISMS involvement has included serving on the Governmental Affairs Council, the Council on Economics and currently the Finance & Medical Benevolence Committee. He also chaired the Board of the Foundation for Medical Care of Central Illinois. Among his professional memberships are the American Medical Association, to which he is an alternate delegate, and the Illinois Society of Internal Medicine, which he has served as president.

Dr. Backs has been an active member of the Sangamon County Medical Society since 1984, serving as its president in 1999 and as a delegate to ISMS from 1995-2003. He has held medical staff positions at St. John's Hospital, where he was president from 1994-1996, and at Doctors Hospital, where he served on the Executive Committee and as president from 2000-2002.
