Oak Brook, IL – Wayne V. Polek, M.D., St. Charles, was inaugurated President of the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) during its 2011 annual meeting over the April 15-17 weekend. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist affiliated with Kane Anesthesia Associates, S.C. in Geneva.

Dr. Polek has been active in ISMS since 1989, most recently serving as President-Elect. For five years he represented Kane and McHenry counties on the ISMS Board as a District Trustee.  In addition, he has held positions on numerous councils and committees, including the Council on Communications; Council on Membership and Advocacy; and the Finance and Medical Benevolence Committee.  Dr. Polek chaired the special committee on membership in 2006-2007.

Locally, Dr. Polek has served as President; Vice President; Secretary/Treasurer; and Councilor of the Kane County Medical Society and is currently its historian.  He has published several research papers in scientific and medical journals, including: the Journal of Clinical Anesthesiology, Anesthesiology, and Current Microbiology.

Dr. Polek received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University, Los Angeles. He received a Master of Science degree in microbiology from California State University, Long Beach, and his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Polek spent his residency at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago and Loyola University Medical Center, where he also completed fellowships in cardiovascular anesthesia and neuroanesthesia.

In addition to his state and county medical society affiliations, Dr. Polek is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists.
